About Zomin Suffa

Zomin Suffa is in Zaamin district (also called Zomin), in Jizzakh region, Uzbekistan. It sits on the Suffa Plateau at about 2,400 metres elevation. The area is in the Turkestan mountain range, also called the Malguzar mountains. It is inside Zaamin National Natural Park, Uzbekistan’s oldest nature reserve. The area is known as “Uzbek Switzerland” or the “Swiss Alps of Uzbekistan”.

Location and Significance

Zomin Suffa is the only ski resort project outside Tashkent region in Uzbekistan. That makes it separate from the country’s current ski resorts. All other Uzbek ski resorts — Amirsoy, Chimgan, and Beldersay — are in Bostanlyk district, in the Chatkal range, about 80 to 90 km east of Tashkent. The Amirsoy-Chimgan-Beldersay cluster is about 250 km from Zomin Suffa, on the opposite side of Tashkent.

What Is Suffa Plateau 2400?

The official project name is Suffa Plateau 2400 (also called Plato Suffa 2400). It is planned as a multi-stage international all-season mountain resort and tourism zone. The wider Zomin tourist-recreational zone spans about 6,432 hectares, while the Stage 1 resort area covers 1,326 hectares on the Suffa Plateau.

Project Status

Resort infrastructure is substantially operational. A Bartholet gondola is running, three Wyndham-branded hotels are open with 720 beds, and a wellness centre, suspension bridge, and tourist attractions are all operating. Limited natural-terrain skiing is possible in winter via the existing gondola, which provides mountain access to slopes above the upper station — though no graded or machine-groomed pistes exist yet. The planned 20+ km ski area with 11 trails remains under development, and no firm ski-opening date has been publicly announced.

What this means for skiers: Zomin Suffa has real infrastructure — a gondola, hotels, wellness centre, and tourist attractions are operating today. Limited skiing on natural terrain is possible in winter for intermediate to advanced skiers, but the purpose-built graded ski slopes are still under development. For skiing in Uzbekistan right now, the operational resorts near Tashkent remain the best option.

What Exists Today — A Partially Operational Resort

Unlike many planned ski projects that exist only on paper, Zomin Suffa already has substantial infrastructure in operation. A Swiss gondola, three international-brand hotels, a wellness centre, and tourist attractions are all open today.

The Bartholet Gondola

The Bartholet gondola has been operational since August 2023. It is an 8-seater gondola, Swiss-manufactured with Porsche Design Studio design. The line runs 2,102 metres with a vertical rise of 530 metres, from the lower station at 1,961 m to the upper station at 2,490 m. With 36 cabins and 12 towers, it moves 1,200 persons per hour. The equipment cost was 6.72 million euros.

Hotels and Wellness

Three Wyndham-branded hotels are operational: Wyndham Garden, TRYP by Wyndham, and Ramada Encore by Wyndham. They opened in November 2022 with a combined 720 beds and investment of 466 billion Uzbek soum. The wellness centre spreads over 2 hectares and serves up to 500 visitors simultaneously, with a swimming pool, jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, Turkish hammam, massage, and fitness facilities.

Tourist Attractions and Access

A 305-metre glass suspension bridge stands 150 metres high — the only one of its kind in Uzbekistan at the time of construction. A 5-storey parking facility accommodates approximately 400 cars. Extreme attractions including ziplines are confirmed operating as of January 2026. Zomin Airport opened in 2023 with a 30-passenger terminal, serving the Tashkent–Zomin–Samarkand route.

What Comes Next

The master plan envisions a second cable car to 3,100 m, purpose-built graded ski slopes, and the full three-stage development. But no firm dates have been announced for when the ski area will open. Winter 2027/28 is a realistic target to monitor.

Future

Second cable car to 3,100 m

Planned high-altitude lift to improve snow reliability and expand terrain access.

Future

Purpose-built ski slopes

20+ km of graded, machine-groomed ski terrain across 11 trails — the core ski product.

By 2030

Full-scale mountain resort vision

Multi-stage all-season destination with hotels, ski slopes, summer attractions, and conference facilities across three development zones.

The original 2021–2026 timeline has passed

The government's original development horizon referenced 2021–2026, but major infrastructure construction continued through 2024–2026. The ski area is the largest remaining component still without a confirmed opening date.

The Planned Ski Area

The ski area at Zomin Suffa is the core of the project — and the largest component still under development. The existing Bartholet gondola is a sightseeing and recreation ropeway, not a ski lift serving graded pistes. The planned 20+ km of ski slopes across 11 trails remain planning figures, not current reality.

Planned Slopes and Trails

The master plan calls for 20+ km of ski slopes across 11 trails of varying difficulty. No detailed piste map with graded runs (green/blue/red/black) has been officially published. A second cable car to 3,100 metres is planned but not yet built — this would significantly expand terrain access and improve snow reliability.

What Skiers Should Know

Currently, no purpose-built ski slopes are operational. There are no graded or machine-groomed runs as of August 2026. Natural terrain and informal skiing may be possible in winter on slopes above the upper gondola station, but the terrain suits intermediate to advanced skiers comfortable with unmarked terrain. For beginners or families seeking groomed pistes, the operational resorts near Tashkent — Amirsoy, Chimgan, and Beldersay — remain the better option.

What We Do Not Know Yet

Several key details about the ski area remain unconfirmed as of August 2026:

Unconfirmed details

  • No published piste map with graded runs
  • No confirmed number of ski lifts beyond the existing gondola
  • No ski-pass pricing publicly available
  • No ski school or rental operator confirmed
  • No avalanche-control system documented
  • No firm opening date for the ski area announced

A Three-Stage Master Plan

The Zomin Suffa master plan divides the project into three development stages, each with its own name, area, and planned facilities. This is a master plan vision — not all elements currently exist.

The most ambitious stage, with an international conference hall and a 5-star hotel at 2,306 m. All elements are planned.

The Combined Vision

Across all three stages, the combined planned investment is approximately $970 million. The plan includes 20+ km of ski terrain spread across the full development. These figures are planned specifications, not confirmed built infrastructure.

For context, the Amirsoy expansion project envisions connecting Amirsoy, Chimgan, and Beldersay into a ~100 km mega-resort near Tashkent. Zomin Suffa is a completely separate development, ~250 km away in Jizzakh region. Other regional mega-projects include Almaty SuperSki in Kazakhstan and the Ala-Too resort in Kyrgyzstan.

Snow and Season

Zomin Suffa's snow conditions depend on a high mountain setting and a short winter window. The snowy period runs roughly from November into March, while mid-winter gives the safest natural cover. The ski season here is tied to natural snowfall.

Elevation Advantage

The Suffa Plateau sits at approximately 2,400 metres elevation — high by Uzbek resort standards. A planned second cable car would reach 3,100 metres, further improving snow reliability above the 2,000–2,500 m range where mid-winter snow cover is generally good. On April 16, 2026, snow fell at Suffa at 2,400 m despite spring, with about 2 cm accumulating — confirming that winter conditions persist into spring at this elevation.

Climate and Snowfall

The climate is a sharply continental mountain climate with rapidly changing weather. December and January are the coldest months. The snowy period runs roughly from November into March, with February as the snowiest month — about 3 inches of average 31-day snowfall at peak. Snow cover is generally good in mid-winter at 2,000–2,500 m, but varies year to year. Early December and late March can be skiable but are less consistent.

Snowmaking

As of 2026, no extensive snowmaking systems are confirmed at Suffa. The resort currently relies primarily on natural snowfall. Snowmaking is part of the master plan, but specific capacity has not been independently confirmed. For now, snow conditions depend on weather — a consideration for any ski resort at this development stage.

Compared to other Uzbek resorts: At 2,400 m, Zomin Suffa's base elevation is significantly higher than Amirsoy (~1,050 m), Chimgan (~1,600 m), and Beldersay (~1,506 m). This elevation advantage offers better natural snow conditions long-term — once the ski infrastructure is built.

Beyond Winter — A Four-Season Mountain

Zomin Suffa is planned as a four-season destination for mountain tourism in Uzbekistan. The resort is deliberately designed for year-round operation, with winter access and summer plans in one mountain setting. The existing Bartholet gondola provides mountain access year-round, while the 305-metre suspension bridge and extreme attractions operate as tourist draws. The Suffa Plateau sits at 2,400 metres and stays significantly cooler than lowland cities in summer.

Winter at Suffa

Winter at Suffa includes natural terrain skiing for experienced skiers, possible before purpose-built slopes open. The open mountain landscape could provide cross-country skiing in winter. The existing Bartholet gondola supports snow tourism by providing mountain access year-round.

Summer in the Mountains

Planned summer activities include mountaineering, horse riding, rock climbing, mountain biking, ziplining, and bungee jumping. Stage 2 (Zamin Ultra) will add 18 summer attractions. The open mountain landscape also offers hiking opportunities. The plateau at 2,400 m is significantly cooler than lowland cities, making it an attractive summer escape.

Wellness and Relaxation

The wellness centre sits on 2 hectares and serves up to 500 visitors simultaneously. Facilities include a swimming pool, jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, Turkish hammam, massage, and fitness. This operational facility supports the year-round resort design, serving visitors in both winter and summer.

Investment and Development Partners

Zomin Suffa brings named partners, fixed budgets, and state backing to one mountain project. The site is inside Zaamin National Natural Park, so stricter environmental rules apply. A radio astronomy observatory with the planned RT-70 telescope also operates at 2,400 m — potential coordination needs for lighting and infrastructure.

Key Organisations

Turkish firm IDEALIST created the master plan. Swiss manufacturer Bartholet Maschinenbau AG built the gondola system (€6.72 million equipment cost). Wyndham Hotels and Resorts operates three branded hotels with 720 beds. Elektrqishloqqurilish, part of Poland-listed RESBUD, handles power infrastructure including a 110-kV transmission line and the new Suffa substation.

Financial Scale

The combined hotel investment reached 466 billion Uzbek soum for the three Wyndham hotels. In January 2026, the gondola and associated infrastructure were sold for 215 billion UZS to a new investor, signalling ongoing commercialisation. Across all three stages, total planned investment is approximately $970 million.

Government Backing

Presidential Decree No. UP-6102 established the tourism zone in April 2021 with a 30-year operating term (extendable). The Uzbekistan Fund for Reconstruction and Development provided loans of $40 million and $60 million. The Uzbekistan government actively promotes Zomin Suffa as a flagship tourism project. The Amirsoy expansion project is another government-backed mega-project near Tashkent.

Environmental and Scientific Context

The resort sits inside Zaamin National Natural Park and a state mountain-juniper reserve, meaning environmental regulations are stricter than in non-protected areas. The Suffa radio astronomy observatory (RT-70 telescope project) also operates at 2,400 m. Future ski-area lighting, electrical infrastructure, and radio interference will require careful coordination between tourism and scientific interests.

How to Get There

The resort lies about 200 km southwest of Tashkent. The road distance is about 250 km, and the drive takes roughly 4 hours. The route uses the Jizzakh corridor, then turns toward the mountains.

~250 km

~4 hours
Drive Time from Tashkent

From Tashkent

The route goes south through the Jizzakh corridor toward Zaamin, then heads up into the mountains. Roads are paved to the base area, with the final ascent mountainous but developed for tourism traffic. A private transfer or organized tour from Tashkent is the most straightforward option.

From Samarkand

Zomin is approximately 200 km from Samarkand International Airport. Visitors can combine Zomin with Samarkand's cultural tourism — the Registan, Shah-i-Zinda, and Bibi-Khanym are all within reach. This "ski and Silk Road" combination is something most mountain resorts can't offer.

The Samarkand Combination

A possible trip structure: Tashkent → Zomin/Suffa → Samarkand (or reverse). This lets visitors combine a mountain resort visit with one of Central Asia's most famous cultural destinations — an attractive option for international tourists who don't want a pure one-week ski holiday.

Zomin Airport

Zomin Airport opened in 2023 with a 30-passenger terminal. It serves the Tashkent–Zomin–Samarkand route, but schedules are limited — check before booking. The airport is in the valley, so a ground transfer is still needed to reach the plateau.

Public Transport

Regular trains and buses connect Tashkent, Jizzakh, and Zaamin, offering a public option for the main leg. For Suffa Plateau access, the final transfer requires a taxi or resort shuttle. Earlier plans mentioned resuming electrified train services to Dashtabad, but current practical access remains road-based.

Where to Stay at Zomin Suffa

Three Wyndham-branded hotels are operational at Zomin Suffa, with 720 beds combined. This accommodation sits inside Zaamin National Park, off the A376 road, covering on-site dining, wellness facilities, and different airport distances.

A 5-star hotel at 2,306 metres is planned for Stage 3 (Oriklisoy) as part of the master plan. This hotel is not yet built. For now, the three operational Wyndham hotels provide the only branded accommodation on the plateau.

Other accommodation options

Beyond the Wyndham hotels, the Zaamin district offers 146 accommodation facilities with 3,103 total beds, including local guesthouses, sanatoria, and the Zomin Suffa Resort. Cottages and chalets (up to 84 planned) are also under construction as part of the Suffa Shalle concept.
