Have you considered skiing in Kazakhstan? Imagine soaring down fresh powder on a high-altitude slope framed by towering mountains and endless blue sky. That’s skiing in Kazakhstan—a surprising hidden gem of the ski world. Kazakhstan isn’t the first place you think of for winter sports, but it should be. The country’s massive Tien Shan mountain range, especially near Almaty, offers spectacular terrain and modern ski lifts.

Shymbulak and Almaty Region Ski Resorts

In the Almaty region, the biggest resort is Shymbulak. It has 20 km of runs from 2,260 to 3,180 meters altitude. Shymbulak’s snow season starts in late November and can last through April. You’ll find slopes for all levels, from gentle beginner trails to steep advanced chutes, and lift tickets are a bargain, often under $25 a day. Locals are friendly and many speak some English, and you can even enjoy night skiing under floodlights on select days.
